Since 2020, Ireland has made impressive strides by connecting over one gigawatt (GW) of energy storage capacity to its electricity grid - a significant milestone on its path to generating 80% electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar energy by 2030 and eventually.
Battery energy storage helps stabilise grid fluctuations and reduce electricity price volatility, enabling greater integration of renewables. These systems are central to Ireland's Climate Action Plan and 2030 targets, enhancing energy security and supporting the national grid's.
Housed in a prefabricated 40ft container, the system integrates 2. 5MW power conversion, 5MWh of high-voltage LFP batteries, a step-up MV transformer, and full monitoring and safety infrastructure.
Storage prices in Ireland have remained competitive in 2026. Small units (25 sq ft) start from €60/month, medium units (50 sq ft) from €105-€170/month, and large units (150 sq ft) from €120-€320/month - depending on county, operator, and features included.
The Shannonbridge B Synchronous Condenser and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which helps to significantly improve Ireland's energy security and enhances grid resilience, is a state-of-the-art development completed earlier this year.
